Victor Conrad is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Seismologist and climatologist who discovered the Conrad discontinuity within the continental crust

How & why

Conrad was a seismologist and meteorologist, the first director of Austria's seismological service, who deduced from earthquake records a boundary within the continental crust separating its upper and lower layers, now called the Conrad discontinuity. He also contributed to climatology and the study of earthquake statistics. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna, he was persecuted for his ethnicity and emigrated to the United States in 1938.
