Umberto Saba is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Poet / lyricist
Umberto Saba (born Umberto Poli) was one of the major Italian poets of the twentieth century, whose plain, deeply personal lyric verse was gathered in his life-long 'Canzoniere'. Born in Trieste, he took the pen name Saba (Hebrew for 'grandfather') and ran an antiquarian bookshop; he had to go into hiding during the Fascist and Nazi persecution. His mother was Jewish and he was raised partly in that heritage.
