Stoppard is a British playwright whose intellectually dazzling works—'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead', 'Arcadia' and 'The Coast of Utopia'—weave philosophy, science and wordplay. Born Tomáš Sträussler in Zlín, Czechoslovakia, into a Jewish family; all four of his grandparents were Jewish and several relatives were murdered in the Holocaust, a history he explored in his late play 'Leopoldstadt'. He is among the most honoured dramatists in the English language.
