How & why

Albert Maltz was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn and trained at Columbia and the Yale School of Drama. He wrote for the theatre and then for Hollywood, and received two Academy Awards for documentary work during the war. In 1947 he was one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to answer the House Un-American Activities Committee; he served ten months in prison, was blacklisted for years afterwards and went on writing under other names.
