How & why

Goldstein was an applied mathematician who advanced modern boundary-layer theory and edited the standard reference Modern Developments in Fluid Dynamics; he was awarded the G.I. Taylor Medal. He helped found the aeronautics faculty at Israel's Technion before becoming a Harvard professor. Born into the Jewish community of Hull, he was a committed supporter of the State of Israel.
