Stefan Wolpe is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Classical composer
Stefan Wolpe was a German-born composer, born in Berlin to Jewish parents, whose modernist music absorbed the Bauhaus, Berlin agitprop theater, bebop and Arab classical music. A Jew and a communist, he fled Nazi Germany in 1933, lived in Vienna and Jerusalem, and settled in New York in 1938, teaching at Black Mountain College and influencing a generation of American composers. His densely eclectic, uncompromising style made him a key figure of mid-century musical modernism.
