Stefan Heym (born Helmut Flieg) was a German novelist and essayist who wrote in both English and German — 'Hostages', 'The Crusaders', 'The King David Report' — and became a famously independent critical voice in communist East Germany. Born into a Jewish family in Chemnitz, he fled the Nazis to the United States, served in the U.S. Army's psychological warfare unit, then returned to the GDR. In 1994 he opened the German Bundestag as its eldest member.
