Biography

Siegfried Sassoon is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — British First World War poet and memoirist

How & why

Sassoon, an English poet and memoirist, was one of the leading war poets of the First World War, in which he served with conspicuous bravery before publicly protesting the war's continuation. His father, Alfred, came from the wealthy Baghdadi-Jewish Sassoon family (his mother was Anglo-Catholic), giving him partial Jewish ancestry. His unflinching poems and his 'Sherston' memoirs shaped how the war is remembered.
