Born into a Jewish family in Malchin, Siegfried Marcus settled in Vienna as an inventor with dozens of patents. In 1870 he mounted a petrol engine on a handcart — the first petrol-powered vehicle — and around 1888 built a second, more complete car that still exists in Vienna's Technical Museum. Then came the erasure: because Marcus was Jewish, the Nazis removed his name from the encyclopedias and the monuments, crediting the automobile to others. Austria restored his memory after the war — a pioneer twice buried, and twice unearthed.
