Sheldon Penman was an American molecular and cell biologist at MIT whose research transformed the understanding of nuclear structure, RNA, ribosomes and the cytoskeleton, revealing the architecture that organizes the interior of the cell. Over more than 35 years he led an influential laboratory, published nearly 300 papers and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He was born in New York City to a Jewish family.
