Harnick was a Jewish American lyricist who, with composer Jerry Bock, wrote 'Fiddler on the Roof' (1964), whose songs 'Sunrise, Sunset' and 'If I Were a Rich Man' became standards drawn from Jewish shtetl life. The Bock-Harnick partnership also produced 'Fiorello!', which won the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Born to a Jewish family in Chicago, he worked in the theatre into his nineties.
