Joseph Stein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — American playwright who wrote the book for the landmark musical Fiddler on the Roof.
Stein wrote the book (libretto) for Fiddler on the Roof (1964), one of the most beloved and long-running musicals in Broadway history, adapting Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish stories of Tevye the Dairyman into a work of worldwide resonance. He also wrote the books for Zorba and other hit shows. The son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, he drew directly on that heritage in Fiddler.
