Sergei Donatovich Dovlatov was a Russian writer whose spare, ironic, autobiographical stories about Soviet life and emigration became widely loved, though most were published only after he left the USSR and settled in New York, where he co-founded the emigre newspaper Novy Amerikanets. His father was of Jewish background and his mother Armenian.
