Saul Tchernichowsky was one of the great pioneers of modern Hebrew poetry, a physician-poet whose vigorous verse — idylls, sonnets, nature and love poems, and translations of Homer and other classics into Hebrew — broadened the range and vitality of the revived Hebrew language. Jewish and a committed cultural Zionist, he settled in Mandatory Palestine, where his image later appeared on Israeli currency. He is counted, with Bialik, among the founding voices of modern Hebrew literature.
