Born Solomon Neuhaus in a Lower East Side tenement, eldest of eight children of Jewish immigrants, Samuel Newhouse took over a failing Bayonne paper at sixteen and never stopped: Advance Publications grew into one of America's great newspaper groups. In 1959 he bought Condé Nast — Vogue, Glamour, later The New Yorker and Vanity Fair — reputedly as an anniversary gift for his wife Mitzi: 'She asked for a fashion magazine, so I bought her Vogue.' The Newhouse School of communications at Syracuse bears the family name.
