Samuel Cygler was a painter and graphic artist of Jewish origin, born in Będzin in 1898 into a respected and prosperous Jewish family. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Teodor Axentowicz, then graphics and printing at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg, and belonged to the Jewish avant-garde group Jung Idysz from 1919 to 1921. Between 1925 and 1926, with Maurycy Apfelbaum and Chaim Hanft, he painted the murals of the Great Synagogue of Będzin, lions, deer and eagles drawn from traditional ornament; the Nazis destroyed the building in September 1939.
He painted Jewish customs, the charm of tradition, and the streets and courtyards of small towns. Deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in August 1943 and then to Mauthausen-Gusen, he took his own life in 1945 on learning that his family had been killed.
