How & why

S. Ansky (pen name of Shloyme Zanvl Rappoport) was a Russian-Jewish author, folklorist and activist best known for the Yiddish play The Dybbuk, a classic of Jewish theatre drawing on mystical folklore, and for leading a major ethnographic expedition to document Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement. He also wrote 'Di Shvue,' the anthem of the Jewish socialist Bund. He was Jewish.
