Rutu Modan, born in Tel Aviv in 1966, co-founded the Actus Tragicus collective that put Israeli comics on the world map, and teaches at Bezalel. Her graphic novels Exit Wounds (2007) — a search for a father after a suicide bombing — and The Property (2013), a Polish restitution story told with tenderness and comic timing, each won the Eisner Award, comics' highest honor. Her clear-line drawing and unsentimental eye made her Israel's most internationally acclaimed comics author.
