Uri Zohar was a pioneering Israeli filmmaker, comedian and actor whose films — above all Metzitzim (Peeping Toms, 1972) and Big Eyes (1974) — became landmarks of Israeli New Wave cinema. At the height of his fame he left the entertainment world, became a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) rabbi and a leading figure in Jewish outreach. He was Jewish, born and raised in Tel Aviv.
