Bergman, an American chemist of Jewish background, discovered the first soluble metal complex able to activate the strong C–H bonds of alkanes, a breakthrough in organometallic chemistry, and earlier described the Bergman cyclization of enediynes. Long a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, he received the 2017 Wolf Prize in Chemistry.
