Robert Badinter was the French Justice Minister who led the abolition of the death penalty in France in 1981, and later President of the Constitutional Council. He was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent (his family from Bessarabia); his father was arrested during the Holocaust and murdered at the Sobibor extermination camp.
