Pipes was a Harvard historian of Russia and the Soviet Union and one of the most influential — and debated — Western scholars of the Russian Revolution, arguing that Bolshevik terror flowed from ideology rather than circumstance. He advised the Reagan administration on Soviet policy. Born to a Jewish family in Poland, he escaped the Nazi occupation in 1939 and later wrote about that experience and Jewish history.
