Richard Desmond was born in Hampstead in 1951 into a Jewish family and left school at fifteen. He built Northern & Shell from a single music magazine, launched OK! into an international celebrity title, bought the Daily Express and Daily Star in 2000 and Channel 5 in 2010. The Desmond Family Foundation has given tens of millions of pounds, chiefly to Great Ormond Street and other children's and health charities.
