Arnold 'Red' Auerbach was the architect of the greatest dynasty in NBA history, winning nine championships as coach of the Boston Celtics and sixteen in total as coach and executive. In 1950 he drafted Chuck Cooper, the first African-American player drafted into the NBA, breaking the league's color barrier. He was born in Brooklyn to a Jewish family—his father a Russian-Jewish immigrant—and is honored in the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
