Rahm Emanuel

Rahm Israel Emanuel, born in Chicago in 1959, is an American statesman whose career has spanned the highest levels of U.S. public life. He served as a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton (1993-1998), as U.S. Representative for Illinois, as White House Chief of Staff under President Barack Obama (2009-2010), as Mayor of Chicago (2011-2019), and as U.S. Ambassador to Japan (2022-2025). He was raised in a Jewish family in Chicago, is the son of Benjamin Emanuel, a Jewish physician born in Jerusalem, bears the middle name Israel, and volunteered in Israel during the 1991 Gulf War.
