Lorre, born László Löwenstein, was a character actor who rose to fame as the child murderer in Fritz Lang's 'M' and became a fixture of Hollywood film noir in 'Casablanca' and 'The Maltese Falcon'. He was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and fled Nazi Germany for Hollywood.
