Peter Altenberg was an Austrian writer and poet, a central figure of Viennese literary café culture around 1900, celebrated for his brief, impressionistic prose sketches and aphorisms. Born Richard Engländer into a Viennese Jewish family, he was of Jewish origin (he was later baptized as an adult). His work influenced writers such as Karl Kraus and Arthur Schnitzler and captured the mood of fin-de-siècle Vienna.
