Paul Wittgenstein was an Austrian-American concert pianist who, after losing his right arm in the First World War, commissioned major left-hand works from composers including Ravel, Prokofiev and Richard Strauss, expanding the repertoire for one hand. Brother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, he came from a family of Jewish descent (three of his grandparents were of Jewish origin) and emigrated to the United States.
