Biography

Paul Milgrom is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Nobel laureate (2020) for improvements to auction theory and the design of new auction formats

How & why

Born to a Jewish family in Detroit, Milgrom advanced auction theory and, crucially, translated it into practical auction designs — including the formats the U.S. government used to allocate radio spectrum to telecom firms, raising billions while distributing resources efficiently. His work bridged deep theory and real-world market design. He shared the 2020 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with his Stanford colleague and former mentor Robert Wilson.
