Born to a Jewish family in Budapest (his parents had converted to Catholicism), Harsanyi survived a Nazi forced-labour unit during the Holocaust and later fled Communist Hungary, emigrating via Australia to the United States. At Berkeley he developed the theory of games with incomplete information, showing how to analyse strategic situations where players are uncertain about one another's motives — the foundation of modern information economics. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
