How & why

Paul Funk was an Austrian mathematician who made important contributions to the calculus of variations and introduced the Funk transform (the Minkowski–Funk transform), an integral transform on the sphere that anticipated the Radon transform used in tomography. He was of Jewish descent and, dismissed under Nazi rule in Prague, survived the war.
