Brest is an American legal scholar who reshaped the study of constitutional interpretation — coining the term 'originalism' in a critical 1980 essay — and of antidiscrimination law, and who served as dean of Stanford Law School. His mother was a Jewish refugee who was forced to emigrate from Vienna in 1938, and he is of documented Jewish descent.
