How & why

Ronald is a plant geneticist at UC Davis whose father, Robert Ronald (born Robert Rosenthal), was a Jewish refugee whose family escaped Nazi Berlin — giving her paternal Jewish ancestry. She isolated the rice gene Xa21, which confers resistance to bacterial disease, and helped characterize Sub1A, which lets rice survive prolonged flooding, advances that protect the food supply for millions of farmers. She received the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 2022.
