Robinson founded the field of sociogenomics, using the honey bee as a model to show how genes and the brain respond to social and environmental experience; he led the effort to sequence the honey bee genome and directs the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois. He received the 2018 Wolf Prize in Agriculture.
