Bernstein was a grandmaster of the classical era, a peer of the world's best in the early 20th century who drew and defeated leading masters including Capablanca. A lawyer and financier by profession, he fled the Russian Revolution and later the Nazi occupation of France, and won a celebrated tournament in Montevideo in 1954 at over seventy. He was born into a Jewish family in Zhytomyr.
