Nelson Algren's mother was of German Jewish descent and his paternal grandfather a Swedish convert to Judaism. He wrote about the Chicago of rooming houses, addicts and card games with a compassion that refused sentimentality; The Man with the Golden Arm won the first National Book Award for Fiction in 1950, and A Walk on the Wild Side followed in 1956. His Chicago: City on the Make is still the city's sharpest self-portrait.
