How & why

Naum Korzhavin, born Naum Mandel, was a major Russian poet whose plainspoken verse resisted Stalinist orthodoxy; arrested in 1947 and exiled to Siberia, he emigrated to the United States in 1973 and settled in Boston. His poems circulated widely in samizdat and became touchstones of dissident Russian literature. He was born into a secular Jewish family in Kyiv.
