Nathaniel Pringsheim was a botanist and one of the founders of the study of algae, who in the 1850s demonstrated sexual reproduction in algae by observing fertilization in Vaucheria. He founded the journal 'Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Botanik' and co-founded the German Botanical Society. He came from a wealthy Jewish family in Silesia.
