Nathan W. Ackerman was a Russian-born American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst regarded as a founding figure of family therapy. He shifted the focus of treatment from the isolated individual to the whole family unit, founding the Family Institute in New York, later renamed the Ackerman Institute in his honor. Born to a Jewish family in Bessarabia, he emigrated with them to New York as a child.
