Shemer was an Israeli songwriter and composer, often called the first lady of Israeli song, whose 1967 'Yerushalayim shel Zahav' (Jerusalem of Gold) became an unofficial anthem and one of the best-loved songs in Hebrew. She wrote hundreds of songs that became part of Israel's national culture. She was born and raised on Kvutzat Kinneret, a kibbutz by the Sea of Galilee, in a Jewish pioneering family.
