Nadezhda Mandelstam was a Russian writer and memoirist who, after the arrest and death of her husband, the poet Osip Mandelstam, preserved his banned poems by memorizing them, then bore witness to the Stalinist terror in her memoirs Hope Against Hope and Hope Abandoned. Her books became landmark testimonies of the Soviet century. She was Jewish, from a Jewish family in Saratov.
