Muriel Rukeyser was an American poet and political activist whose work fused documentary reportage, science and social conscience, from 'The Book of the Dead' on an industrial disaster to poems on feminism and human rights. Her poem 'To be a Jew in the Twentieth Century' became a widely cited affirmation of Jewish identity. She was Jewish and drew openly on that identity in her writing.
