Moshe Arens was born to a Jewish family in Kaunas and reached Israel by way of New York, where he studied aeronautical engineering. He taught at the Technion and, as vice-president for engineering at Israel Aircraft Industries, built the design capability behind the Kfir and later the Lavi. He then served as ambassador to Washington, Defence Minister three times and Foreign Minister, and wrote the first full account of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising to give the Jewish Military Union its place beside the ZOB.
