Gomberg discovered the triphenylmethyl radical in 1900, the first stable organic free radical, founding the chemistry of free radicals that underlies polymers, combustion and biology. He spent his career at the University of Michigan, where he also headed the chemistry department. Born to a Jewish family in the Russian Empire, he emigrated with his father to the United States to escape persecution.
