Born to a Jewish family in Sioux City, the son of Russian immigrants, Morris Mirkin served in the US Air Force in World War II and in 1958 opened a small car-rental office at Wilshire and Robertson in Los Angeles. His idea was in the name he chose: Budget — renting for less than the giants, for people watching their money. With Jules Lederer he incorporated Budget Rent a Car in 1960 and built it into a worldwide network before selling to Transamerica in 1968. His foundation was devoted to children with learning disabilities.
