Born Sándor Herz to a Jewish family in Austria-Hungary, John Hertz arrived in Chicago as a child and worked his way up from newsboy to car salesman. In 1915 he founded the Yellow Cab Company, taxis at modest prices painted a yellow that could be seen from the end of the street — the yellow cab the world knows is his. In 1924 he bought Walter Jacobs' rental fleet and renamed it Hertz Drive-Ur-Self, the company that still carries his name. His racing stable completed the circle: Count Fleet, foaled of his Reigh Count line, swept the Triple Crown in 1943.
