Morris Michtom was a Russian-Jewish immigrant candy-shop owner in Brooklyn who, with his wife Rose, created the first stuffed 'Teddy bear' in 1902, inspired by a cartoon of President Theodore Roosevelt sparing a bear. With the president's permission to use his name, their creation was so popular that it grew into the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company, one of America's largest toy makers. He was Jewish.
