Biography

Milton Levine is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Created the Ant Farm and co-founded Uncle Milton Toys; more than 20 million sold and still in production

How & why

Milton Martin Levine was born in Pittsburgh on 3 November 1913 to Harry and Mary Levine, both Russian Jews. As a boy he collected ants in a jar on his uncle's Pennsylvania farm, and at a Fourth of July picnic in 1956 he watched an ant hill and thought of selling one. The Ant Farm — a thin, sand-filled plastic frame you could see through, sold by mail with a coupon for live ants — went on to sell more than twenty million and is still made by Uncle Milton Toys, the company he co-founded. Asked what he had learned from a lifetime of ants, he said they never stop working.
