Miguel Najdorf is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — Polish-Argentine chess grandmaster; the Najdorf Sicilian bears his name
Miguel (Mendel) Najdorf was a Polish-Argentine grandmaster and one of the world's top players in the 1940s and 1950s; the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence bears his name and remains among the most analyzed openings in chess. Stranded in Argentina when World War II broke out, he lost his entire Jewish family in the Holocaust and set blindfold-simultaneous world records partly hoping surviving relatives would hear of him. He was born into a Jewish family in Warsaw.
