Loève was a probabilist whose Karhunen–Loève theorem provides the optimal way to represent a random process by a series of orthogonal functions, a result fundamental to signal processing, data compression and statistics. His two-volume 'Probability Theory' became a classic graduate text. Born to a Jewish family in Jaffa, he studied in France, was interned by the Nazi occupation, and later joined Berkeley.
